When The Holy Family Knocks: An Advent Preparation Devotional

For thousands of years the people of Israel had immersed themselves in the scripture and prophecies regarding Christ’s birth. Still, despite all their efforts, few recognized Jesus as the savior for whom they had all been waiting, even with the signs in the sky announcing His arrival.  During their vigil, they became so distracted by their own ideas of what a savior should be that when the Holy Family came knocking on their doors in Bethlehem, ready to give birth to God in their homes, they turned them away, not recognizing them.

During this Advent season, as we wait for the coming of Christ, let us prepare our hearts and adjust our expectations about how God may appear when he arrives. Are we so distracted by what we think God “should” do or be for us that we do not recognize his presence in our life? Ask the Holy Spirit to relieve you of unnecessary expectations, help you to recognize Christ as He is, and invite Him into your life.
